柔らかさの英語表現

物体の柔らかさに言及するための英単語は数多く存在し、その使い分けが必要になったので、整理した。

Softness
Oxford辞書によると、Softは、”Easy to mould, cut, compress, or fold; not hard or firm to the touch”とある。簡単に成形でき、分割でき、圧縮したり折り曲げたりできる、とあるので、下記に挙げるような様々な「柔らかさ」の程度が総じて高い物体に対して用いられるようだ。対義語は、HardとFirm。

Compliance
Oxford辞書では、”The property of a material of undergoing elastic deformation or (of a gas) change in volume when subjected to an applied force. It is equal to the reciprocal of stiffness”とある。物理用語。力が加わった時に体積変化や弾性変形が生じる物体の特性、であり、対義語はStiffness。

Elasticity
Oxford辞書では、”The ability of an object or material to resume its normal shape after being stretched or compressed; stretchiness”とある。伸ばされたり縮められた後に元の形状に戻る物体や素材の性能、とある。伸縮性のこと。ただし、二つ目の意味として、”Ability to change and adapt; adaptability”という、適応性の意味もあるようだ。

Flexibility
Oxford辞書では、”The quality of bending easily without breaking”とある。壊れることなく容易に曲げられる特性、とある。

Compressibility
Oxford辞書によるとCompressは、”Flatten by pressure; squeeze or press”とある。圧力によって平たくすること、とあるので、圧縮性のこと。

Tenderness
Oxford辞書によるとTenderは、”(Of food) easy to cut or chew; not tough”とある。食品限定で、切り分け安く、噛みやすいという意味で使える。
